Welcome to the Fire Systems Training Wiki
This is your manual for servicing fire protection systems: what we do, why we do it, which rules say so, what goes wrong, and what Dow expects on top.
You'll be working to two rulebooks: British Standards BS and the American NFPA codes NFPA. Most of the time they agree on the big picture but differ on the details, such as how often, which test and what counts as a fail. On top of that, Dow's own CTT requirements DOW can be stricter than either one. This wiki always shows them side by side so you never mix them up.
Your learning path
Foundations
Start here: how fire works, the two rulebooks (BS and NFPA), the words we use, and working safely on site.
Fire Extinguishers
Portable and wheeled extinguishers: types, monthly checks, annual service, discharge and hydrostatic testing.
Hose Reels
Fixed hose reels: inspection, flow testing and hose condition.
Coming soonFire Doors
Fire-resisting doorsets: gaps, seals, closers, hardware and signage.
Coming soonHydrants
Private fire hydrants and fire mains: operation, flushing and flow tests.
Coming soonFire Alarms
Detection and alarm: panels, detectors, call points, sounders and cause & effect.
Coming soonSprinkler Systems
Wet and dry pipe sprinklers: valve sets, alarm tests, pumps and water supplies.
Coming soonPre-action Systems
Detection-released sprinkler systems: interlocks, supervisory air and trip tests.
Coming soonDeluge Systems
Open-head water spray and deluge: valves, detection, nozzle coverage and full-flow tests.
Coming soonFoam Systems
Foam concentrate, proportioners and discharge devices: proportioning and concentrate tests.
Coming soonGas Suppression
Clean agent, inert gas and COβ systems: cylinders, room integrity and safety.
Coming soonHow each topic works
Every equipment type follows the same five steps:
| Step | What you get |
|---|---|
| 1 Β· The Basics | Plain-English "here's what we do", with a step-by-step flowchart. Start here. |
| 2 Β· The Whys & the Standards | The reasons behind each step, and BS vs NFPA compared line by line. |
| 3 Β· What Goes Wrong | Common faults, what they mean, and when to stop and escalate. |
| 4 Β· Dow Requirements | Where Dow's CTTs differ from or add to the standards. |
| 5 Β· Test & sign-off | Flashcards, a scored test, and practical tasks your supervisor signs off on site. |
What the labels mean
The VERIFY tag means the point still has to be checked against the latest edition of the document before you rely on it.
